Daniel Hillier has finished the PGA of New Zealand’s northern swing of PGA Pro-Am’s with a victory, joining Charlie Smail, Jake Meenhorst, and Fraser Wilkin as professionals taking home silverware.

Omaha Beach Golf Club was the last of three Pro-Am’s played in Northland after Waitangi Golf Club and Sherwood Park earlier in the week.

The swing started with the Barfoot & Thompson Waitangi Pro-Am on April 28 – The sun was beaming, and players were greeted with benign conditions perfect for scoring. Charlie Smail and Jake Meenhorst took advantage, making seven birdies and shooting fine rounds of six under 66’s to share the top step on the podium with four others a further shot back. The victory is their second of the 2023 season.

Waitangi’s host professional Pieter Zwart finished in a share of ninth after a three under 69.

The Platinum Homes/DVS Pro-Am was played the following day. Auckland professional Fraser Wilkin continued his hot form, winning his second event of the season in as many starts.

He finished with impressive rounds of 65 and 67 at Sherwood Park to finish two strokes ahead of the in-form Tyler Hodge who fired consecutive 67s. Harry Bateman, Gareth Paddison, and Dongwoo Kang finished a further shot back in equal third.

The Platinum Homes/DVS Pro-Am has been on the NZPGA Pro-Am tournament calendar for nine years, raising money for charity – Wilkin donated part of his winner’s cheque to the I Have a Dream Foundation, helping the event fundraise just over $7,000.

Finally, Daniel Hillier headlined the final event of the northern swing, the Fruehauf Trailers Omaha Beach Pro-Am.

He lived up to the hype surrounding him, firing a scintillating 62 in the final round after a 68 in round one to win by a shot over Dongwoo Kang before he heads back to Europe to resume his DP World Tour season.

Kieran Muir, Dongwoo Kang, and Jordan Loof all led after a challenging opening day with 66’s, but were caught by the DP World Tour player on the second day as Hillier made eight birdies and a bogey. Kang carded a final round of 65 to lock up second place, with Tyler Hidge shooting the day’s best score, a 61, to finish a shot further back alongside Muir and Josh Geary.

The PGA Pro-Am season takes a break after the Autex Muriwai Open, which begins on April 13.
