Player Interview - Josh Geary chats with Cam Jones

Gears! What a start to 2021 it’s been for you mate. Multiple wins a number of top finishes here on home soil! How would you assess your form these last few months?

Josh Geary

Yeah it’s been a solid start to 2021 , my form has been solid in terms of scoring but I feel there’s still some work to do in a few areas of my game

PGA NZ

Nice one mate. Now I understand you’ve been using the stats platform created by the institute of golf, what has that shown you about your game and has it changed how you go about your business?

Josh Geary

Yeah I have , it certainly highlighted that I need to drive the ball better , also my mid – long range putting was a lot worse than I thought it was . With the 3 areas of your game you need to work on most highlighted and re calculated after every 5 rounds it has helped me identify and work on those different areas as they need work. With my solid form in the last few weeks I was surprised at how many different ways I shot similar scores thanks to various parts of my game stepping up when others weren’t firing

PGA NZ

That’s some pretty insightful data. Now I’ve been made aware you’ve traveled north up into Europe. What have you got coming up over there mate?

Josh Geary

Yeah I got a last minute start at the British masters this week , challenge tour next week in Sweden and it looks like I might get a start the following 2 weeks on the European tour in Denmark and Germany. Then a mixture of European tour and challenge tour after that.

PGA NZ

That’s great news mate and what a time to get some starts with the form you’ve been in. That must be exciting. What has the travel experience been like given the current state of the world? Is this your first time overseas since pre covid?

Josh Geary

Yeah good time to be getting some starts for sure . Yeah first time travelling since covid . It’s a lot different than before! Lots of hoops to jump through with all the rules and restrictions in place but I feel safer for those. Lots of added expenses too which isn’t ideal but it is what it is . Just happy to be back over here playing again.

PGA NZ

Yeah no doubt! There’s so much more to professional golf than just playing the game as it is, isn’t there? And on that note, who have you got in your corner supporting you and your career? As we know, although golf is an individual sport, the importance of having a great support network is heavily underrated.

Josh Geary

Yeah lots more behind the scenes. My sponsors Autex, Clubcar, NZstrong and Ocean Australia have been a huge help in supporting me. My Coach ian godleman who I haven’t seen in person since covid , physios Trevor Montgomery and Emma Ferris and my Chiropractor Ian wood. A lot of work goes in behind the scenes and they are all in my corner helping me do what I do.

PGA NZ

That’s good stuff mate what a team you have behind you! Anyways, best we let you get back to your preparation ahead of your event this week. Thanks heaps for your time and sharing some insights with us. Really appreciate it
