Best of the New Zealand players was defending
champion Michael Long, who finished T12 on -11, banking $A 10,000 for his
efforts. Close behind was Michael Hendry, T15 on -10, for $7,900.
Hendry lost momentum with a 3rd
round 74, but that still got him into the final round, cut to 36 players. The only other NZ player to make the final
cut was Ben Campbell (T33 on -5). Josh
Geary and David Klein made the 2nd round cut, but not the final day.
Spieth
looking ominous
Jordan Spieth has got his putter working
again, and the rest of his game is not bad either…..He needed only 10 putts on
the back nine at Pebble Beach on Saturday, in the AT & T Pebble Beach
Pro-Am, to take a six shot lead into the final round. He hit 17 greens on Sunday to record -19 for
the tournament, and a four shot victory over Kelly Kraft, with Dustin Johnson a
further shot back in 3rd place.
Tim Wilkinson was the only New Zealander to
make the cut, finishing T39 on -4. This
sees him slide a few places to 108# on the FedEx Cup standings, but his
consistent play could see a top result coming soon.
All the usual celebrities were in the
Pro-Am: Bill Murray chose to play in dungarees for his final round, Wayne
Gretsky partnered Dustin Johnson, and Justin Timberlake, who was Justin Rose’s
partner, came very close to a hole in one on the iconic 7th on the
final day. The 25 teams who made the
final round had to shoot -16 or better: in the end the winning combination of
Ken Duke & Carson Daly (not related to John presumably?) blitzed the field
with a four round tally of 33 under par.
Maybank
Championship
The winning score here in a thrilling
finish was also -19, with Paraguayan Fabrizio Zanotti eagling the final hole to
beat American David Lipsky by a shot.
Neither will be playing this week in Perth, giving Michael Hendry, Ryan
Fox, Brad Shilton, Michael Long, Josh Geary, Mark Brown and Ben Campbell their
chance against a strong field, courtesy of their 2016 rankings on the PGA Tour
of Australasia.
Southern
Wide Tokarahi Legends Pro-Am
Alan Rose, Martin Pettigrew and American
Perry Parker shared a win in the Tokarahi Legends Pro am today. Tied for fourth
were Peter Hayes from Timaru, Tomas Mezera and Michael Holden from Australia on
even par 72.
Thirty nine professionals were full of praise
for the immaculately prepared nine hole course. Club President and voluntary
greenkeeper Marty Mc Cone should be very proud of the compliments heaped on the
course by all the professionals, and the country hospitality was appreciated by
all players. The Legends Tour is playing today in the MainPower Rangiora Pro-Am.
