Introduction

Holden Scramble Returns for 7th Year in 2008

In the last sixteen years more than 5000 local Holden Scramble events have been contested across Australasia with in excess of 650,000 amateurs competing to win their way to the Championship Final for the opportunity to play alongside some of Australia and New Zealand's biggest names in golf.

In continuing the new-look elimination-style format, in 2008 the Holden Scramble undergoes some exciting format changes, which will guarantee the event remains the most popular pro-amateur event on the Australasian golfing calendar in 2008 and into the future.

Innovative New Look for Holden Scramble

Remaining as a three person teams ambrose event, the 2008 Holden Scramble will continue to be played under the elimination style format as outlined below:

  • All team members tee off each hole
  • Team chooses the shot they are going to use
  • The golfer whose shot is taken is eliminated from participating in the next shot
  • A player is only eliminated for the one shot following his/her selected shot
  • This process continues up until the ball is holed out with one person being eliminated for each shot, including putts. (ie only two players play each shot except for the tee shot)
  • All three players tee off the next hole and the elimination process begins again
  • The eliminated player cannot take a practice shot or putt during the time they are eliminated

For example:

  • Peter, John & Jane tee off the first hole, Peter's drive is selected as the best shot
  • Peter is eliminated for the next shot and only John & Jane take the second shot
  • Jane's second shot is selected as the best shot out of Jane & John's second shot
  • Jane is eliminated for the next shot and only John & Peter putt
  • John & Peter each putt, and John's is the closest to the hole
  • John is eliminated from the next putt, Jane & Peter putt and Peter sinks the putt
  • Peter, John & Jane all tee off the second hole & the elimination process starts again

All other rules, including the three tee shot rule, will remain unchanged for this year.

Championship Levels

The Local Event
Teams of three amateur golfers (playing in groups of six) will experience the excitement of ambrose competition, playing for a range of prizes and / or tee gifts plus a spot at a Regional Final.

A Local Event is sponsored by the local Holden Dealer. Any amateur golfer who carries a current NZ Golf Handicap is eligible to compete.

The three types of Local Events your professional may choose to stage include:

Open Event
The event is open to any golfer with an official NZ Golf 18-hole handicap.

Members Event
Only members of the host golf club are entitled to compete.

Invitational Event
The event is open to members and invited guests and a minimum of one club member must play in each team.

Contact Jim Clelland, the NZPGA National Events Manager, either on (0800) 742-727 for leaving a message, or (0274) 432-589, or via email, or visit the Holden Scramble Schedule section of this website for the location of your nearest Open Event.

The Regional Final
Winning team/s from Local events advance to one of six Regional Finals conducted in October / November of each year. A Club Professional joins the winning team/s to form a four person team that competes at leading courses around New Zealand, with the winning team cementing their spot at the Championship Final.

Regional Final dates and locations are now confirmed and can be found in the full schedule here: 2008 Holden Scramble Schedule

An amateur player may play in only one Regional Final. Once he/she has qualified for a Regional Final he/she is no longer eligible to play in a Local Event and qualify for another Regional Final. The automatic penalty for such a breach is team disqualification.

It is a condition of entry that each Local Event winning team/s bring a scorer to a Regional Final who will be assigned to another team as an independent marker.

The Championship Final
The final level of the Holden Scramble offers Regional Final winning teams the chance of a lifetime - to play with a leading Tournament Professional at one of Australia's premier golf resorts set up in full tournament conditions - Novotel Twin Waters Resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in Australia. Click here to view more information about Novotel Twin Waters Resort.

28 teams from around Australia and 6 teams from the New Zealand regional finals will compete over 3 days of golf to determine who the Champion Holden Scramble team for Australasia is. Hosted by the PGA of Australia, the Holden Scramble Championship Final has become the most sought after event in Australasian pro-amateur golf. With sun, competitive golf, fun, functions and parties - the five day event is something that all successful participants will nenver forget.

How To Form A Team

Local teams must consist of three amateurs that have a current 18-hole NZ Golf handicap. Teams with fewer than three amateurs are ineligible. The composition of the team must conform with the Holden Scramble Handicap Format, as follows:

  1. Only one single-figure handicap is allowed in each team at local level.
  2. Maximum handicap for male members of a team is 27, while 40 is the maximum for female members. Any handicap exceeding these figures will automatically be reduced to the applicable maximum. All teams shall be formed by using the following Holden Scramble format.

Each team's aggregate handicap must total no less than 24: its maximum aggregate must not exceed 81.

For example:
11 + 11 + 1 = 23 (ineligible)
14 + 12 + 10 = 36 (eligible)
9 + 29 (27) male + 20 = 56 (eligible)
6 + 45 (40) female + 30 (27) male = 73 (eligible)
18 + 27 + 37 female = 82 (ineligible)

To determine the net score on the day of the local Event, the team's aggregate handicap is divided by 6. The resulting figure is then subtracted from the team's score for the Ambrose 18-hole event.

For example:
Team aggregate handicap of 55 is divided by 6 = 9 1/6
Team scratch score = 70
Net score = 60 5/6 (70 minus 9 1/6)

To determine the net score on the day of the Regional Final and Holden Scramble Championship Final, the team's aggregate handicap is divided by 8. Please note: A team's aggregate handicap may not be increased at Regional/Holden Scramble Championship Final level but it may be subject to reduction if any team member has reduced his/her handicap after the Local Event. The individual team member's handicap index established at the Local Event remains fixed for the entire Championship, except that any reduction will be re-calculated. No increase will be allowed.

The current official 18-hole NZGolf handicap of a substituting player can be greater than, equal to, or up to two strokes less than the Local Event qualifying handicap of the original team member.

Example:
Original team members qualifying handicap - 12
Substitutes handicap - 10
Substitute will play off - 10

Example:
Original team members qualifying handicap - 12
Substitutes handicap - 15
Substitute will play off - 12
