Richard Lee 59

History today at the Tauranga Golf Club, where North Harbour PGA Professional Richard Lee scored the first ever professional round under 60 in this country.

It was the second round of the Carrus Tauranga Open, the first Charles Tour event of 2010, and remarkably it has only put him into a tie for the clubhouse lead with amateur Nick Gillespie (65 63 = 128). Lee's first round was a 69.

Lee started his round off the 11th tee and immediately birdied his first three holes. He then added another on the 18th to play the back eight holes four under par. Off the first tee he birdied the first three holes, eagled the par five sixth, then birdied eight to be ten under with a couple to play. He made an up-and down on the par three ninth hole then drove the greenside bunker on the 10th, his last, before exploding out to five feet. He calmly (at least on the outside) stroked the putt home for the 59.
